surveying the beginnings, progresses, and ends, and prudently comparing all things among themselves, he will judge and determine what ought to and can be gathered. To me, however, as I notice these present-day struggles over religion, so long-lasting and so pernicious, while tracing such footprints and seeking some method of consoling and confirming myself in these most troublesome straits in the true opinion, there often came to mind those struggles of Christ and the Apostles with the Pharisees, Scribes, and chief priests, which appear to have such a similarity with ours that, as the saying goes, no egg is more like an egg. Nor do I believe that they were so diligently described by our Evangelists without reason, but so that posterity might discern in them that those things are being fulfilled in the members which it might learn from thence happened to the head. But because I felt myself marvelously refreshed and confirmed by comparing them very often among themselves, I was led to communicate a great part of those things which my mind suggested to me to the students of truth, who will not disdain to read them.
