Consideration must be given to symptoms, such as constipation, diarrhea, fainting, and weakness of strength.
Therefore, if the bowels are constipated, emollient and cooling enemas are appropriate. One must abstain from purgatives, because the strength of the patient cannot endure them.
Conversely, in cases of diarrhea, cooling binding agents should be mixed in, such as syrup of dried roses, or syrups of myrtle, quince, and similar substances.
