But because this disease is placed in the number and category of those that are called great and acute, since it threatens the most present dangers, it will therefore be especially necessary that it be encountered and the patient be consulted as quickly as possible.

The methods by which the disease is countered are sought from a triple source: namely, from the use of pharmaceuticals, from surgery or surgical operation, and from the regimen of life.

The regimen of life consists in the six non-natural things being duly observed. Therefore, as far as the air is concerned, let the patients see that it is temperate or only slightly inclined toward the cold. But if the season does not provide such, let it be prepared by art.

In diet, the warnings of Hippocrates, 1 Aphorism, must be observed again and again, where in all internal inflammations, and indeed also in other acute diseases, he wants a most light and exquisite diet to be prescribed for the patients. Nevertheless, account must always be taken of the strength, as well as the age, the nature, and the habit of the patient.
