THE AUTHOR OF THE EPISTLE.
James, who is the author of the present epistle, was of the number of the twelve Apostles. For the Greeks expressly add to Apostolo to the Apostle, and the Syrians, who soon after the times of the Apostles translated the Gospel of Christ and these epistles, which we call canonical, together with others into their own language, acknowledge James the Apostle. But since in Matthew chapter 10 two Jameses are recounted in the catalog of the Apostles, it can be asked not in vain, which one he is: the son of Zebedee, or the son of Alphaeus. In the decision of this question, I follow the opinion of Jerome, who pronounces him to be the son of Alphaeus, and the same who is called James the Less, James the Just, James the brother of Judas, and James the brother of the Lord. Therefore, this will be the James whom the Apostle Paul met in Jerusalem, as it is in Galatians chapter 1, where he says that he saw no other Apostle besides James the brother of the Lord. Furthermore, he is called the brother of the Lord because he was the son of Mary
