and to act thus, as if they are to be judged by the law of liberty. And the law of liberty is indeed of Christ, whose doctrine primarily requires good morals. It is called the law of liberty because it does not bind us to external ceremonies, but serves God with a cheerful spirit and voluntarily in every kind of good work. Therefore, there is nothing here that is not Apostolic.
TO WHOM THE EPISTLE IS WRITTEN.
James testifies in the title that he is writing to the Jews converted and dispersed throughout the whole world, which are indeed special. However, since in the progress of the doctrine he gives general precepts about morals everywhere, it certainly pertains to us also, and to all the faithful no less than the epistle to the Romans, or those to Timothy, and similar ones. For common morals and universal rules regarding conduct bind all men of the same profession.
