For this evil invaded the church early on, which the Lord Christ said of the Jews in Matthew 23: They sit in the chair of Moses; do what they teach you, but do not act according to their works, signifying that the Jews do not philosophize rightly in the law of Moses. Thus, the church of Christ indeed had many professors of faith: yet there were few who thought that to be a Christian was nothing other than to testify to innocence in life and morals. He therefore corrects the perverse morals of these people.
The principal kind is hortatory, as happens in deliberations where rules and precepts about morals are given. Added after these are things which adorn this, such as didactic, laudatory, vituperative, and the like.
The scope of the Apostle is to instruct the pious on how to live in this world, so that this is his sentiment: Pious people must be concerned above all else to adorn the profession of their faith with the study of every good...
