for them to profess their cause as it truly was, because the very name of defection and treason is hateful to all kings, all peoples, and all nations, they fabricated many foul and shameful things with which they might fill the ears of certain kings, princes, and great states, claiming that they were being driven from their ancestral homes, banished from their wives and children, and that everything was being stolen from them and their families for the sake of religion and divine worship. And especially to the Pontifex Romanus Roman Pontiff/Pope, these things are whispered—in more common parlance, spoken to the Pope—by whom they were first driven into these crimes, claiming that all these evils were visited upon them because they favored his holy interests, because they adhered to his sect, and because they defended his jurisdiction, authority, and kingdom. Yet before this conspiracy, some of this sect, and especially the princes and authors of the conspiracy themselves, maintained such a course of life—in their studies, their morals, and the form of their religion—that they seemed to have lived more familiarly with those monsters original: "Sardanapalo & Catilina" Sardanapalus and Catiline than to be numbered among the proven and incorrupt citizens of a just kingdom.
