And although the ambition and moroseness of certain theologians are not undeservedly suspect to us—men whom we do not doubt will oppose our cause so that it may not be legitimately examined—we nevertheless promise ourselves better things from most of you who sit at the helm of the Church and State, and who, instructed by the experience of affairs, have seriously embraced Christ and have not sworn by the words of any man. Therefore, your Highnesses, most illustrious Princes, your Dignities, most noble Counts, Barons, and magnificent Magistrates of the free cities of the Empire, and likewise your Piety, faithful and moderate Pastors of the churches in Germany and Doctors of the schools, and finally you all who have embraced the holy Gospel of God in the Augsburg Confession, we ask that you deign to read with kindness what we propose in the name of all the pious in Germany who are in peril under the gathered odium of the Zwinglian and Calvinist name. We ask you, for the sake of our common Savior JESUS CHRIST, for the sake of public peace in the Church, and by the bowels of Christian charity, to leave aside prejudices and preconceived opinions, and to judge this whole controversy according to the Word of God and the Orthodox consensus of the ancient Church.
