For it is not only regarding the Lord's Supper that it is contended with such fervor of dispute, but also regarding the person of JESUS CHRIST, our Savior and Mediator, regarding the union and distinction of the divine and human nature, regarding the omnipresence of His body, and the oral manducation of the same, which is said to occur with mouth and teeth, and is common to both the pious and the impious, and likewise regarding His Ascension into heaven and His session at the right hand of the Father, such that not a few ancient heresies, which were once condemned and extinguished, are now raised as if from the underworld, lifting their heads again. But those who do not wish to admit these new portents of errors, unknown to learned antiquity, are hissed at under the hateful names of Zwinglians and Calvinists, as if they argue that Christ is a liar, as if they establish bare and empty signs in His Supper, deny that His flesh is life-giving, tear apart His person like Nestorius, and deprive Him of all power in heaven and on earth, and do not think of Him more honorably than the Turks do in their Koran; furthermore, that they impiously pervert the doctrine of His Ascension and dream that He is held captive in the heavens, and finally that they imagine a Mahometan heaven, and by the same actions rob Christian men of the sweetest consolation which they perceive from the presence of Christ, and are authors of the most harmful schisms.
