XXXVII.
Therefore, the Eucharist is not to be given publicly to a notorious sinner unless his repentance is publicly known.
XXXVIII.
However, it must absolutely be given to an occult sinner who asks for it publicly, but not at all privately, even if he were then bound to communion.
XXXIX.
By Ecclesiastical law, a natural fast is also required for the use of the Eucharist, the beginning of which should start from midnight. A case of necessity is excepted.
Appendix.
It is a remarkable imposture of the Sectarii sectarians that they attempt to prove from Augustine that it is a matter of indifference whether one communicates on an empty stomach or not.
XL.
The Eucharist is not necessary for salvation for infants. By adults, however, it ought to be received by divine law when it is prudently judged to be necessary for that end for which it was instituted, namely to sustain the life of grace with spiritual nourishment.
XLI.
And indeed, by the precept of the Church, those who have reached the years of discretion are obliged to communicate once a year around the time of Easter.
