but with a full stride, how it entered into the
spaces of the disciplines of more refined hu-
manity, and how much of them it completed
more quickly than expected by diligently fol-
lowing the footsteps of its most illustrious
ancestors, both in many other Academies and
in this one of ours, at the helm of which it sat,
which it held worthily and treated remark-
ably. In which place, not only were the foun-
dations laid by you of that wisdom and virtue,
by which, once instructed, you might one day
govern the Republic praise-worthily, but the
illustrious testimonies and monuments of
both still exist for the memory of posterity.
And there is reason why we may seem able to
vouch for you to others in your name, if you
persist in such great progression toward vir-
tue, and incitement of wisdom, and the
thought of both, having applied spurs to your-
self, and nothing has repressed or hindered
the excellent alacrity and zeal of your noble
spirit, that no one of your peers will be behind,
and perhaps you may even surpass many; to
which experience of your strengths we wish
divine blessing. Therefore, there is less reason
for me to fear that I might appear to want to
curry your favor with a certain bit of flattery,
since you are not one who would allow yourself
to be captured by illiberal traps, nor am I
at all learned in such things; and what has
been said by me looks to nothing else than the
