These things I mention, listeners, because since neither the Church can be found without Teachers, nor true and legitimate Teachers without being endowed with true doctrine, nor even (which follows) in the true Church itself, you should understand that the question of in which assembly of men true and legitimate Teachers of Theology are found today, and among whom the true Church of Christ and the true doctrine exist today, is of the same importance. For what argument could be more useful for the salvation of the soul, especially in these times; or what could be more appropriate to the present celebration, when I am about to confer the insignia of a Doctorate in Theology upon a most learned man, and one most worthy of this honor, in the judgment of the Theological senate; or finally, what could be more worthy of my own profession, for me to discuss? To me, indeed, nothing seems more appropriate to be said on the matter than that which is spoken regarding the very thing that is being enacted.
