A decorative drop cap letter I begins the text.IN THE BOOKS On Affected Locations original: "de Locis affectis", referring to Galen's De Locis Affectis, it is proposed, chiefly by Galen, to demonstrate the method by which it is possible to appropriately and methodically investigate and recognize the parts of the body that are affected contrary to nature.

Affected locations are parts of the body harmed by some affection.

Diseases cannot be cured correctly unless the affected locations are recognized first, because the treatment must also change according to the variety of the locations.

Therefore, just as things that are on the surface offer themselves to the senses, so those things that lie hidden in the deep are comprehended by the mind, and are known to be affected through certain signs.

The general method of recognizing which parts hidden in the deep are affected had its beginning in Anatomy: from which, as if from a first principle, those general sources of signs depend, pertaining to the knowledge of affected locations.
