FROM THE FORM OF THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE EXCRETED, affected parts are recognized. First, dia tēs ousias tōn merōn through the substance of the parts. Then absolutely: as when, because of a piece of lung rejected expectorated lung tissue, we say the lungs are affected; and because of a membrane rejected, we say the larynx is affected by an ulcer.

Then by applying a distinction which is taken from the Position or the path through which they are excreted, Pain, Magnitude, Time, Mixing with other excrements, and similar things. Thus, indeed, a rejected membrane or caruncle small fleshy outgrowth signifies ulceration. But if it has been rejected through the urine, it indicates an affection in the urinary instruments; with the menses, in the uterus; through the stool, in the intestines; if thicker, in the lower intestines; if thinner, in the upper parts.

Next, from the periechomenōn contained materials, whether kata physin according to nature or para physin contrary to nature. And here too, partly absolutely: as when we argue that the bladder is harmed if urine is rejected through a wound; the intestine if stool; the peritoneum if omentum; the chest if breath.
