part affected, but more rarely. For example, a tumor appearing to the touch in the hypochondrium the upper abdominal region on the right side signifies that the liver is affected, not the spleen; on the left side, the spleen, not the liver.

Often, however, we argue more conveniently about the affected part from its position, when it is used as a distinction of those things that appear in the excreta.

For if, for example, a fragment of a membranous tunic is excreted, it signifies that an ulcer exists somewhere; then the position and the path through which it exited will demonstrate the ulcerated part, depending on whether, for instance, it was rejected through the stool, or with urine, or with menstrual blood, or through vomiting, or by coughing, or by clearing the throat, or otherwise.

THE SAME REASONING APPLIES TO PAIN. For by itself and absolutely, it indicates very little and only in a general way. For example, stinging pain teaches that membranous parts are affected; pulsating pain, muscular parts; heavy pain, parts lacking nerves.

But if it is observed with the distinction of those things that appear from position and contents, it properly indicates the affected parts. Where, for example, there have been signs of an ulcer rejected by vomiting, then
