Hofmann, I received your Apology—which our booksellers sought in vain at the autumn Frankfurt fairs, and finally bought at the recent spring ones—only at the very end of May. I read it, but I did not approve of it, because you seem to me, more and more, to be defending a very bad cause in it. With the exception of a few places, I judge that it does not even need refutation by learned theologians, whether because of my own dullness or because you are mistaken. Nevertheless, I will respond, partly because I see that unless I respond to your demonstrations to the eye, I will be held as convicted by you—so far is silence from profiting the silent—and partly so that you do not think I have been struck by your μομφαῖς censure/reproach, by which you thought I could be terrified.
