which you make resound so loudly, calling it ordinary and continual since Jesus Christ and the time of the Apostles. This title of "ordinary" presupposes an order, and this order presupposes an ordinance by which two things are established: namely, the office and the form and rule for being introduced into it. And whose ordinance is this? It is that of the Son of God, having spoken as Master and Lord in the house of His Father through the mouth of His Apostles: for this reason they are called founders (Eph. 2:20; 1 Cor. 3:10). In short, the Pastors and Doctors are called builders on this foundation: that is to say, executors of this order, placing it into effect in the Churches committed to them without changing, adding to, or diminishing anything in it, just as under the ancient covenant, Moses had to erect the tabernacle entirely according to the model that had been shown to him on the mountain (Heb. 8:5).
