superiority of degree over one's equals and companions, by which, little by little, this horrible confusion has entered into the Ecclesiastical ministry. There remain the Priests, Curates, and Deacons, in whom the disorder is all the greater because the names of Priests and Deacons authorized in the scriptures color this abuse for the ignorant. The Scripture therefore shows us that there were in the Apostolic Church two sorts of those who were specially called Presbyteri Elders: from which the name of Priest has come into the French language. Some labored in the administration of the word of God, otherwise called Pastors; others were joined to the Pastors in censures and other Ecclesiastical affairs (1 Tim. 5:17, Rom. 12:8, 1 Cor. 12:28). In the Papal hierarchy, in place of this second species of Elders, the Officials, Promoters, and Prosecutors in Church Court—as if to spite God and spit in the face of the poor Church—have been introduced (an abuse too abominable), changing it into a Priesthood to offer Jesus Christ again, really and essentially, for the living and for the dead.
