And if we ever experience some who are intractable, merciless, disobedient, and truce-breaking original: ἀπειθεῖς καὶ ἀσπόνδους, let us recall the voice of Bucer to Bullinger, concerning a man who was overly pleased and indulgent with himself: "The Lord has given such a one to us. Let us therefore bear him just as we have received him."
Moreover, it has seemed good to me, most noble von Werden, to consecrate this illustrious Treatise on the three Theorems to your name, so that you might have a public memorial original: μνημόσυνον of my benevolence toward you. I am not accustomed to love anyone unless I notice that they revere God, delight in the exercise of virtues and learned doctrine, and possess the best morals. Since I see that you also excel in the count of these, I celebrate God, who has blessed you; and I pray to the same that he may further bless you, so that your light may shine, and men may see your good works and glorify the Father who is in heaven. You know that Nobility is not placed in titles, in the broad stripe, or in riches, but in true virtue and the knowledge of the most beautiful things, and in right deeds by which the glory of the Ancestors is illuminated. Therefore, let that saying of Antisthenes always please you: "Those who are endowed with virtue, the same are also noble."
Although I am not ignorant of what the judgments—or rather, prejudices—of certain men are regarding these studies and dissertations of ours, I sometimes repeat for the sake of others and myself that old saying, taken from Plutarch: "The wise speak" original: λέγουσι μεν οἱ σοφοί.
