Grynaeus, Johann Jakob · 1587

This theorem having been demonstrated: Christ is one: the Son of God, and King of Israel. John 1:50. These consequences follow most evidently.
1. No man, and therefore not the Roman Pontiff, is to assume the honor and title of being the CHRIST OF THE LORD BY ANOINTING, THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH, THE VICAR OF CHRIST. For on earth there is no more need for a vicar of the Lord Jesus than in heaven: since he himself is present with his Church by his Spirit even to the end of the age: nor does he wish to use the work of other servants than those whose perfect enumeration exists. Eph. 4:11, 12.
2. No one else is to be invoked as an ADVOCATE before the Father except the one Lord Jesus Christ, who, as he alone was crucified for our sake and resurrected, so he alone is the Mediator, that is, both Redeemer and Intercessor. Therefore none of the blessed angels, none of the ministers of the Old and New Testaments, of whom mention is made in the Holy Bible, ever wished to be considered an Advocate before God.
Therefore Ambrose spoke piously, writing in his Epistle to the Romans: They are accustomed, he says, TO USE A MISERABLE EXCUSE, saying: It is possible to go to God through the just, just as one reaches a King through his courtiers. Come now. Is anyone so insane, and unmindful of his own salvation, that he would claim the honor of a King for a courtier: when, if any are found to be dealing in this matter, they are rightly condemned as guilty of high treason? And do these men not think themselves guilty, who bestow the honor of the name of God upon a creature, and having abandoned the LORD, ADORE FELLOW SERVANTS, as if it were something greater, that one serves God? For indeed, one goes to a King through tribunes and courtiers because a King is merely human, and does not know to whom he should entrust the Republic. But to God, whom nothing escapes, for he knows the merits of all, there is no need to seek favor or to use a go-between, but only a devoted mind. For wherever such a one speaks, He will answer nothing.
