Just as in the body of each one of us, the veins, which are vessels of natural blood, are joined in a most beautiful covenant with the arteries, in which resides the vital spirit that fosters the blood with its heat so that it does not spoil; so in the reborn man, Truth is associated with Peace in a wonderful covenant. Indeed, it kindles, fosters, and preserves that peace so that the man of God may be whole and perfectly instructed for every good work.
However, just as the openings of the veins and arteries are mutual, so that the spirit, like a small flame, snatches nourishment from the veins, and by reciprocal right, fosters and invigorates the blood in the veins with its own heat: so there is a certain holy synarmosis fitting together/harmony of Peace and Truth, which causes them to perpetually imprint those holy kisses, of which the Psalmist sings: Mercy and Truth will meet together; Justice and Peace will kiss each other. Psalm 85:10.
Rightly, therefore, that great man Melanchthon of blessed memory said: "As we live, so in a lamp the flame snatches nourishment from the wax, and in the same way the spirit in us draws its sustenance from the veins; and in this matter, a most beautiful example of mutual communication is proposed to us in this civil life. And the image corresponds to many things that God wills to be associated, such as the Word and the Holy Spirit. Likewise, to Faith and Works."
