It seemed good to me, Magnanimous Lord Barnekow, to institute this dissertation concerning the fiery darts of Satan amidst the ecclesiastical and academic occupations by which you know well that I am variously distracted; partly so that I might be a monitor to the pious and ingenious youth, so that they might learn both to avoid the darts of Satan and to pray ardently to the Lord: "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from that Evil One." And partly so that I might provide a sharpening stone to those to whom the Lord grants more leisure and gifts of the Holy Spirit than to me. For I know that the spirit of the prophets ought to be subject to the prophets.
I pray, however, to the Son of God that He may stand by you, most noble Lord Barnekow, and protect you as you contemplate a journey to Italy Latin: Ausonia at this time, from every evil; and that He may keep you pure and restore and preserve you safe to your fatherland, for the glory of God the Father and the utility of the Republic. Basel, on the Kalends of September, 1587.
