There is no lack of enemies, nor of hostile camps, with whom
You may engage in battle, and join in combat:
Against whom, the great GRYNAEUS now equips you with victorious arms,
Having earned them; lend your ear to him.
For he does not here bring forward Goliath, that Mars the god of war,
Whom the tender little boy felled with a sling:
He does not bring the sons of Atreus here, the two lights of brothers; nor the
Macedonian monarch here, the conqueror of Asia; nor the
Famous descendants of Aeacus, the lineage of arm-potent Achilles,
Nor Telamon under his sevenfold shield:
He does not bring Priam's Hector onto the stage here,

He does not bring the twin Scipios here, two thunderbolts of war,
Or the Fabii or the Fabricii, those sprouts of Mars:
He stirs a greater work. He brings forth into the sacred arena

Exercised in spirits and years) whom I name.
Who know all the tricks, and a thousand frauds of doing harm;
Ready, whether by deceit or by force, to act.
The prince of whom, the Ruler of Darkness and of Orcus,
SATAN, THE CALUMNIATOR, and parent of crimes,
Daily casts down upon miserable mortals, another,
Fiery DARTS in dense showers: Cacus, a fire-breathing monster from Roman mythology
A thousand
