Response: Indeed, the Spirit himself testifies together with our Spirit that we are the Sons of God. And if sons, also heirs: heirs indeed of God, but co-heirs of Christ. Rom. 8:16-17.
5. SATAN: These things mean nothing for you, concerning which it was permitted for the Apostle, who enjoys a special privilege, to boast.
Response: Indeed, the same Paul, celebrating the common happiness of the Elect, says: Moreover, he who confirms us with you in Christ, and who anointed us, is God. Who also sealed us, and gave the pledge of the Spirit in our hearts. 2 Cor. 1:21-22.
6. SATAN: You are deceived when you think these things are truly said to you.
PIOUS MIND: Indeed, you lie, when you wickedly detract from the praise of truth with the oracles of Him who is the Spirit of truth: but you are deceived, when, acting as a murderer, you attempt to withdraw the safeguards of consolation and life from the Elect.
7. SATAN: And what is your faith, finally, the character of your election? Do not the Demons also believe? If faith is the character of election, we Demons are also elected.
PIOUS MIND: You believe, but you tremble, you most foul Cacodamons: because the history concerning Christ Jesus is known to you, by which you also understand it to be true. But to us, the elect, God has not given the Spirit of timidity, but of strength, and love, and soundness of mind. 2 Tim. 1:7.
8. SATAN: I know that faith consists of knowledge of history and firm Assent. And I professed that long ago, saying to JESUS: I know who you are, surely that Holy one of God. Mark 1:24.
PIOUS MIND: Indeed, the faith of the elect consists primarily of plerophoria full assurance, that is, certain persuasion and trust concerning the grace of God and the merits of Jesus Christ, by which eternal life has been truly acquired for us, the elect. You tormentors are entirely destitute of this trust.
If we have resisted Satan in this manner with our mind, he will flee from us. James 4:7.
XXIII. Soliloquy of Flesh and Spirit.
1. The Flesh, contradicting the Spirit in a man who is tempted: These things which Satan roars are indeed horrible, it says, but not entirely false. But leaving those aside, I ask this of you: Is it consistent that God is led by care for you, who completely neglects the whole human race?
SPIRIT: Indeed, it is so far from being the case that that Custodian of men is led by no care for these things, that even the hairs of the head of every man are numbered. Matthew 10:30.
