not insofar as it is blood, but insofar as it is blood shed for us, is the drink of the faithful soul. For when that is rightly understood, it will no longer seem incredible, which we say with Paul concerning the Fathers: namely, that they were once no less participants in the grace and virtue of Baptism and the Supper of the Lord, than we at this time are participants in the grace and virtue of the Paschal Lamb and Circumcision, as a seal of the righteousness of faith. 1 Cor. 10:2-3; 1 Cor. 5:7; Col. 2:11. For, as Augustine says, the signs having been changed, the things remained the same: because the same Christ is today, yesterday, and forever. Heb. 13:8.
MINDFUL AND STUDIOUS OF TRUTH.
But what then is the Food and Drink truly exhibited to us in the mystical Supper?
Just as each of us has by divine gift both an observable Body, which is also the Temple of the Holy Spirit: and a spiritual and rational Soul, in which shine the rays of the Sun of righteousness and wisdom: So food and drink of two kinds are truly exhibited to us in the holy Supper, namely, Earthly and Symbolic, which pertain to the Body: and heavenly, which pertain to the faithful Soul: responding to each other by a certain elegant Analogy: and joined by a sacramental Union: just as we understand through faith, having been instructed by the word of God.
