Just as it now comes into the light of men, I have decided that it should be dedicated to you alone, Alessandro Peretti, most distinguished Cardinal. Truly, I am so far from seeking praise through it that I believe there will be far more who, having read it, will criticize it, than those who, having heard it, commended it. But since it must be published, there is no one who would not admit that it is owed most of all to you: not only for the reason that no one else’s access to the hands of the most holy Pontiff could be more convenient;
