ALTHOUGH I cannot deny, most clear and learned gentlemen, that the benefits we receive from our parents are so great that we can never return worthy thanks for them: for we received this natural life through them; we were raised and nourished by them with so many cares and vigils; and, finally, we received our wealth and resources from them, acquired through many labors: Nevertheless, if I weigh their merits against those of the men who, by their prudence and counsel in correctly establishing our studies and in choosing a certain path of life, show us the way and the method, and are primarily focused on leading us by their effort and labor to some height of erudition and learning: I certainly believe that they should be compared not only to parents, but that the same reverence and gratitude is owed to them as well. For if we consider this natural life received from our parents, that life is common to us
