XXVI.
Whence, since plants lack that mediocrity, the sense is not in them, even if they are affected apo ton haplon from simple [qualities] (book 2, On the Soul, context 124). Nor can a simple body, such as the heavens, have sensation (book 3, On the Soul, final chapter).
XXVII.
Three things are attributed to the sense: the apprehension and judgment of sensible objects, then pleasure or pain, and finally pursuit or flight (book 3, On the Soul, context 29).
XXVIII.
Furthermore, Aristotle wrote that all sensible objects are perceived through a medium (book 2, On the Soul, context 75 & 114); but most physicians, while they grant this for Sight, Hearing, and Smell, correctly demonstrate that Taste and Touch occur through a certain conjunction and contact, from the fact that a bare nerve, when cut, feels pain.
XXIX.
Therefore, the medium of sight is to diaphanes the transparent, either simple, like the heavens, air, or water; or mixed, like ice or glass: all of which, although they are distinct in genus, nevertheless communicate in this, that they are transparent and are illuminated by the presence of light.
XXX.
Hence, Light is defined as the act of the transparent from a more known function (book 2, On the Soul, context 59). It differs from "lux" radiance/source of light in that "lux" is light in its source, and "lumen" lumen/transmitted light is light in another.
XXXI.
The medium of hearing, called di-eches through-sound/resonant, is either air or water. Nature made the auditory meatus sinuous so that it would be safe from external injuries; hence it is credible that those who are drowning can hear until the very end.
XXXII.
The medium of smell, which Aristotle calls anonymon nameless (book 2, On the Soul, context 76), and Theophrastus calls aismon perceivable, is likewise air or water. We, however, cannot smell in water, just as fish do, because we cannot breathe in pure air; but that fish, devoid of lungs, smell without respiration is not alien.
