Hence one must resort to medicines that evacuate menses: these are (as Galen wrote in book 5 of Simple Medicines) those which possess the power of heating, yet not strongly drying: such as catnip, pennyroyal, spignel, wild ginger, cassia bark, cinnamon, spurge laurel, centaury, wormwood, bay berries, and others.
Externally, use a fumigation of aromatics: for by its power it opens the obstructed ends of the vessels, attenuates the thickness of the humors, and removes obstructions by cutting them. Especially, we shall foment the uterus with fragrant fumigants: namely, wild thyme, pennyroyal, calamint, nut grass, iris, anise, and similar things boiled in water.
An emplaster formed from lupine flour, myrrh, hellebore, rue, and ox gall applied externally will also be beneficial. Pessaries composed of the same substances may also be inserted.
Obese women are cured by a thinning dietary regimen, more vigorous exercises, and medicines that can render the body leaner: such as frequent purging of the belly and ointments that possess the power of evaporation.
