What is a word? The smallest significant part of a sentence according to syntax.
How many accents? Ten: acute (´), grave (`), circumflex (~), long (—), short (⏑), rough (῾), smooth (᾿), apostrophe ('), hyphen (‿), and sub-comma (,). Into how many are the ten accents divided? Into four: into tones, into quantities time, into breathings, and into affections. How many tones? Three: acute, grave, and circumflex.
Note that the places of the acute are three: the ultimate, the penultimate, and the antepenultimate. The place of the grave is the ultimate. The place of the circumflex is the ultimate and the penultimate.
Furthermore, note that a word having the acute or grave on the ultimate is called oxytone. Having the acute on the penultimate, it is called paroxytone and barytone.
