An ex-libris label from the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica (Ritman Library) is shown. A rectangular white label contains a central oval emblem. Around the border of the oval is the text "HERMETIC PHILOSOPHY" original Latin: "PHILOSOPHIA HERMETICA". The central image depicts a pelican in her piety, feeding her young with blood from her breast. This image is a traditional Christian and alchemical symbol of sacrifice and the revitalization of matter. The bird is perched upon a cube or pedestal adorned with four red roses arranged in a cross pattern, likely signifying Rosicrucian influence.
