Now for a second time, by a diligent comparison of edited volumes, and also of a very ancient and highly reliable manuscript, as well as another from the Vatican, purged from innumerable errors and increased by several chapters. Furthermore, it is enriched with all the Greek and Latin fragments that exist among the ancients, as well as certain writings of Saint Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna and Martyr, never before published, and finally with all other parts of the works of the same Saint Irenaeus that could be found.
Various annotations have been added to individual chapters, by which the reasoning for corrections is given, many obscure points are illustrated, and whatever pertains to Ecclesiastical antiquity and the refutation of both ancient and recent heresies that could be drawn from these books is copiously provided.
ALSO ADDED IS THE CONFLICT OF ARNOBIUS THE CATHOLIC AND SERAPION THE EGYPTIAN, concerning the triune and one God, and the two natures in Christ, never before printed.
A printer's device or emblem is set within an ornate architectural frame. In the center is an oval cartouche depicting a tree with a bird, possibly a rooster or phoenix, standing at its base. Flanking the central image are two vertical banners. The left banner reads "SI SAPIVS PROPERO" If I hasten more wisely and the right banner reads "VITA SEMPER" Life always. The frame is decorated with scrolls, fruit, and masks.
