Less splendor, and less expenditure on unnecessary things that benefit human society not at all and contribute nothing to happiness, would open the dried-up spring to draw forth the useful, to provide support, and to reward capable men. Space forbids me from citing even more of the meritorious men of this ancient lineage, and my subject is restricted solely to Johann von Dalberg, the former Bishop of Worms and the Wiederhersteller der Wissenschaften restorer of the sciences at the end of the 15th century, whose merits I have resolved to illuminate more closely in this essay. These are, however, only collected reports, sought out and gathered from many scattered books and placed in a single perspective so they may be surveyed as a whole. I sought to improve other uncertain reports, as will be recognizable from the treatise itself. My intention here is also primarily to draw the attention of other learned men to this meritorious and learned Bishop, so that in the future his life and merits
