Wolfgang was knighted in Rome in 1446. Although several other persons of higher rank were present to be knighted, this honor was granted to him before all others. This is based on an imperial Freyheit privilege or freedom that this family received. He married Gertraud Greifenclau von Vollrath, daughter of Friedrich Greifenclau von Vollrath and Adelheit von Langenau, in the year 1444. Johann von Dalberg was thus born to these parents, of whom the father died in 1476 and the mother only in 1502.
