The century was also all the more fortunate for him and for his education because during it the sciences were revived and pulled from the dust that had undeservedly covered them. Even the examples of other great figures who promoted them must have spurred him to imitation. For he saw before him the Emperors Sigismund, Frederick III, and Maximilian I. He saw the Popes Nicholas V and Pius II, who previously bore the name Aeneas Sylvius, an exceedingly learned man who was valued, loved, and honored by all high heads of state. He saw King Charles VII of France, King Henry VII of England, King Alphonso V of Spain, King John I of Portugal, Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary, Diether, Elector of Mainz, and Eberhard the Bearded, Count and later the first Duke of Wurttemberg. He also saw the profoundly learned Cardinal Ximenez in Spain and the great Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence, along with many others, partly as predecessors and partly as contemporary promoters and scholars. These figures instilled in him courage and a kind of ambition to make this same fame his own. Just as these were the primary promoters, the number of scholars themselves who were encouraged by them was even greater, and in time, he grew fond of them.
