Since I should now speak of Johann von Dalberg's youth, of his education, of the development of his intellectual powers, and of his teachers in his youth, in order to see how he prepared himself for the following time, what treasures of literature he collected, how he applied them, and how he came to the wealth of such a comprehensive erudition; I suddenly see myself plunged into a mighty depth, out of which I am not able to look up. Here is a gap which, if records from him himself are not yet found and discovered, can hardly be filled anymore. It is easy, however, to imagine that Wolfgang von Dalberg, his father, would have spared neither diligence nor expense to have his son so educated as to produce from him a useful member of human society, the state, or the church in his time. An early-sprouting genius is soon noticed, and without a doubt, he allowed this to be seen in time, so that it encouraged his father to have it fully developed by capable and qualified teachers.
