Constant, Alphonse Louis · 1860

This work is divided into two parts. In the first, the author establishes the kabbalistic and magical dogma in its entirety; the other is dedicated to the cult, that is to say, to ceremonial magic. The first is what the ancient sages called the clavicle key; the other is what country folk still call the grimoire textbook of magic. The number and subject of the chapters, which correspond in both parts, are not at all arbitrary and are fully indicated in the great universal clavicle, for which the author provides a complete and satisfactory explanation for the first time.
This book is catholic in the sense of being universal, and if the revelations it contains are of a nature to alarm the conscience of the simple-minded, it is consoling to think that they will not read it. It is written for men without prejudice, and the author wished to flatter neither irreligion nor fanaticism.
