In a prospectus of this work, which appeared in 1807, it was proposed to publish the whole together in two large quarto volumes at the price of four guineas to subscribers. Since that time, several important additions and improvements in the arrangement were suggested to the author by some learned and judicious friends, to whose critical inspection he had submitted the manuscript copy of the work. Consequently, he has been induced to undertake the laborious task of recasting the entire work into three volumes. The first volume, which is now submitted to the public, contains all the preliminary materials: 1. A general Introduction, showing the necessity of this undertaking based on a review of the present state of chronology, the leading systems, and the means of improving it on scientific principles; 2. Elements of Technical Chronology; and 3. Elements of Sacred Geography; both of which are essentially connected with Historical Chronology and designed to supply defects and correct mistakes in the elementary treatises of Beveridge and Wells.
William Beveridge (1637–1708) and Edward Wells (1667–1727) were well-known authors of works on chronology and geography.
The second volume, which will comprise the entire body of Sacred Chronology, will hopefully follow within this year. The third volume, containing the several branches of Profane Chronology, will follow in the course of the next year at the latest, God willing. To counteract as much as possible the delay in completing the work for the press caused by the change to the original plan, it is now proposed to publish the volumes separately as soon as they can be finished.
