...with twenty parts, twenty parts of tin [are] killed/purified. [21] ...With alkali... twenty parts, sour liquid, alkali, tin, mica, orpiment, cinnabar, sulfur, mercury—with these four, again and again, one should perform the heating puṭa until it is dead/purified. [21] Lead and tin [are] made dead/purified... [22] By this method, the lead is killed; it is said to be dead. By the method of the sages, the lead is restrained, and tin, having reached the fire, is used in all works... [23] The method for killing lead, tin, and iron is stated: dead lead, dead tin, dead copper, and likewise dead iron—each one part is known to be the essence-dissolver. [24] Dead lead is that which is purified; by that, the lead, and likewise the method of lead, dead tin, and copper, and likewise dead iron... these, each one, lead, tin, copper, or iron essence separately, [with] sulfur and mercury, dissolve... [24] Now, showing the power of the Great Seed mahābīja: one should establish the gold-making essence, the total of the essence... [25] Commentary: Now, the names of the seeds, which have been fashioned by the sciences, are to be made. [26] Now the method for dissolving cinnabar: with sulfur, orpiment, realgar, and mercury... ...having given the sulfur-mixture, apply the clay... until it dissolves... [28] Now, for the purpose of gold-calcination jāraṇa, the viḍa alchemical salt mixture is stated: sulfur, orpiment, realgar, sauviraka a type of antimony/collyrium, cinnabar, the alkaline, sour, and saline substances, viḍa, gold-pyrites, and bimāla a mineral in equal parts. [29] Commentary: Sulfur, orpiment, realgar—these are sulfur, orpiment, and realgar shilājatu; they are equal parts. Also sauviraka, rasaka zinc ore, cinnabar. Here, they are called equal; in that way, [they] should be made equal parts. Then alkaline, sour, and saline substances: alkaline are yava-kshara, etc.; sour are sour gruel, etc.; saline are rock salt, etc. These are equal parts. [29] By the use of viḍa, the seed dissolves. [30] Commentary: With this very viḍa combination, one should heat the gold in a copper vessel... twenty times... then it dissolves and becomes water-like. [30] Now the dissolving of the vaikrānta a specific mineral, perhaps tourmaline essence is stated: [the essence] of mercury, one-hundred-fold purified, combined with it, calcined; vaikrānta, four-fold, in the hundred-fold purified [mercury], dissolves in equal parts.
