Mercury destroys the worms of leprosy and gives strength, longevity, and nourishment. Through use, it destroys all doshas, is tasty, and is heavy and astringent. The qualities of mercury are endless; [in comparison to] diamond, it is a thousand-fold; in gold, one hundred-fold; in silver, eighty-fold; in copper, sixty-four-fold. Shri. Thus, in the Rasaratnākara composed by Nityanatha Siddha, son of Parvati, in the Rasa-khaṇḍa, the fourth instruction titled the "Chapter on Swooning and Binding" is finished. 4. Shri.
Now, the purification and killing of the secondary substances (uparasas) is stated:
Sulfur, diamond, vaikrānta, vajra, tālaka orpiment, śilā realgar, kharpara zinc ore, śikhitu, tuttha blue vitriol, vimalā, hemamākṣika pyrite, kāsīsa green vitriol, kāntapāṣāṇa lodestone, vararājana, hiṅgula cinnabar, kaṅkuśa, śaṅkha conch, mṛn, nāga lead, ṭaṅkaṇa borax, and śilājitu bitumen. These are called secondary substances. Their quantities are given where appropriate. [If used improperly,] it causes leprosy, bile, heat, dizziness, and pain. It destroys vitality, strength, and beauty. Therefore, purify the sulfur: Place it in a vessel with ghee and milk. Bind the mouth with cloth. Place the sulfur on top and seal it with a lid. Place it in the vessel with coals and give a light heating. Then, collect the sulfur from the milk and use it in pure processes. With one part mustard oil or castor oil, or flower oil, or sheep's milk and ghee, or cow's milk and vārunālaka, fill the vessel with a small amount. Bind it with cloth, put the sulfur on top, seal it with an iron vessel, and place it in the heating apparatus. Thus, extract the liquid.
Shri. That which is in that liquid.
