VI PREFACE.
The Florentine itself, although it is far superior to other books as being the archetype of all, nevertheless contains many false and erroneous readings. I could by no means remedy these defects unless the outstanding learning and generosity of I. L. Heiberg had brought aid through the mediation of Vitelli. I only regret that all of Heiberg's corrections and many of Vitelli's were communicated to me after the book was already printed, so that it is now necessary to propose many things in the 'Addenda and Corrigenda,' and for the most part to incorporate them into the very context of the text. This will not be done without some inconvenience to the readers.
