the archangel of fearsome appearance, with a fiery sword in his hand. And when he sees him, he is terrified and trembles at the vision. His tongue is tied, he hides his gates likely referring to the senses, turns his eyes away, covers his face, flees here and there, and cannot do anything. For I am before him on all sides, and he cannot endure to receive me, from the fear and the vision of my fearsome holiness. The eyes of the soul and the body mingle, and he sees me as fearsome, with a fiery sword in my hand. And he sees the path that lies before him, and the punishment, the darkness, and the gloom. He sees his wife, his children, and his relatives, and he looks to them with fixed eyes, shaking his head. He pleads and says: "See me and help me!" But they do not hear his voice, and no one can see [me] except for the sick person, for I am fiery, I do not have a body, and I am his seeker.
Saint Gregory says: "Do you take the soul, or does it release itself?" The angel says: "The pain extracts the soul, and then I take it." Saint Gregory says: "Where does the soul of the sinner go?" The angel says: "Where there is sin and darkness, and because of all the putridity, rotting, stinking, foul deeds, and ignorance."
