Which is better for the name of the deceased? Is it the fast, the prayer, or the oghormut'iwn alms/mercy, or the gift? The angel says: The fast is a benefit to the one who fasts, not to the deceased. But the prayer and the alms are like good seed that gathers its fruit into the storehouse. Likewise with alms and the prayer that is made for the sleeper i.e., the deceased; it flies like an eagle and pulls the soul of the deceased from the depths of hell. It snatches it from the hands of Satan and makes it like a white dove, and sets it before God. Saint Gregory says: If someone has lived all the days of his life in the midst of sins and has not confessed, and has not repented, but at the hour of death he comes to his senses and confesses, and weeps over his transgressions, and laments before God, and falls before the holy altar, and asks for forgiveness, and requests the Holy Mystery of the Body and Blood three days before, or two, or one, if he does this with repentance, does God accept it or not? The angel says: If a man has made Satan his master for all the days of his life, and has willingly committed sins or evil deeds, but at the hour of death he laments and weeps and confesses with an upright heart, and with desire seeks
