...just as dew upon the grass, and as the Saint imparts the immortality of the dew of life, and it rejoices in the Lord. Saint Gregory says: What is the grain that is distributed in the name of the dead? The Saint replies: Boiling the grain signifies the dead body, and the sprout that comes upon it signifies the grace of the resurrection of life, so that the souls may be renewed. Saint Gregory says: What is the meaning of bowing the knee and asking for the forgiveness of sins for the deceased? The Saint replies: As much as the survivors remember the dead, the soul rests and is comforted by divine grace. Saint Gregory says: What is the meaning of giving alms in the name of the dead? The Saint replies: It enlightens the soul of the deceased and makes it worthy of bright glory. Saint Gregory says: How does a man turn from sins, as he is? The Saint replies: He is cleansed from sins and freed from torments, but he does not have the same honor, for it is written: in my Father's house there are many dwelling places. Saint Gregory says: If a man is confessed at all times, as he is? The Saint replies: Such a person has stored up treasures in heaven, which neither moth nor rust destroys, and thieves cannot steal. Saint Gregory says: When does he receive the reward? The Saint replies: If the person is merciful, he receives recompense in the upper Jerusalem, which the eye has not seen, and the ear has not heard, which God has prepared for the merciful. But if he is a great sinner and is confessed and repentant, he is a saint and is awaited with longing through good deeds, for that place is the upper Jerusalem.
Saint Gregory says: Which is better than all meditations?
The Saint replies: Confession and repentance, and the memorial that one establishes in the church. If one performs these four good things, he does not enter into Gehenna and is not deprived of the kingdom of God.
