diminishing in capacity and thickness toward the two poles due to the slowing of motion
in what is near them. The Earth, water, air, and fire
are in the interior of the sphere of the Moon, and all created beings are on the surface of the Earth.
The air is attractive to what is in their bodies of lightness, and the Earth is attractive
to what is in their bodies of heaviness, in the manner of the magnet loadstone that
attracts iron to itself. The Earth is divided into two sections, between which is
the equator, and it is from the East to the West. This is the length of the
Earth, and it is the largest line on the sphere, just as the zodiac ecliptic/zodiac band is the
largest line in the heavens. The circumference of the heavens at the position of
the equator is three hundred and sixty degrees, and the degree is twenty-five farsakhs leagues. The farsakh is twelve thousand cubits dhira, and
the cubit is twenty-four fingers, and the finger is six grains
of barley, aligned and stuck belly to belly, for the appearance of some of them. According to
this ratio, the circumference of the Earth is one hundred million cubits
and thirty-two million cubits. And it is, in terms of farsakhs,
eleven thousand farsakhs according to the calculation of the people of India. As for Hermes Hermes Trismegistus,
he estimated the circumference of the Earth and assigned to each part one hundred miles;
thus, it would be thirty-six thousand miles, and it would be from the
farsakhs twelve thousand farsakhs. Between the equator and each
of the two poles are ninety degrees, and its circumference in width
is the same. However, the inhabited land on the Earth after the equator
is sixty-four degrees, and the remainder of the Earth is a wasteland, having no habitation
in it due to the intensity of the cold and freezing. The entirety of creation is in the northern quarter
of the Earth. Also, the southern quarter, which is that which is above
the equator, is neither inhabited nor cultivated due to the intensity of the heat there and...
