and the tamarisk and the acacia, forming continuous thickets. In them, their livestock and animals rest and dwell, seeking shade during the intensity of the heat and the burning of the summer. In these thickets are lions, giraffes, gazelles, hyenas, fennec foxes, rabbits, and hedgehogs. In the Nile are types of fish and kinds of large and small whales. From it comes the food of most of the Sudanese; they hunt it, salt it, and store it. It is at the peak of fatness and thickness. The weapons of the people of these lands are bows and arrows, and upon them is their equipment; clubs are also among their weapons, which they make from ebony wood, having wisdom and perfect craftsmanship in them. As for their bows, they are of oriental reed, and their arrows are from it, and likewise their strings are of reed. The building of the people of these lands is of mud and wood, and long, wide timber is rare among them. Their ornaments are copper, beads, and necklaces made of glass, shells original: "Bazawq", the saliva of the sheikh likely referring to a specific type of shell or resin bead, and kinds of mottled glass composites. These things and states that we have mentioned concerning foods, drinks, clothing, and ornaments are practiced by most of the Sudanese in all their lands because they are lands of heat and intense glow. The city dwellers among them grow onions, pumpkins, and melons, and they are greatly valued among them. They have no wheat, and no grains other than millet, from which they make fermented drinks and drink them. Most of their meat is fish and dried camel meat.
