When you bow to me, I lower my head. Where have I not instructed you on the heart-essential?" Longtan stood in hesitation. Huang said, "If you see it, see it directly. If you try to think about it, you miss it." Longtan was instantly enlightened. He then asked, "How do I protect and maintain this?" Huang said, "Let your nature wander freely; follow conditions and be broad and open. Just exhaust the mundane mind; there is no other sacred understanding."
As Luopu said:
'Just forget all views; if all views are exhausted,
The mundane does not arise. Wisdom is clearly illuminated; there is no other business.
If one wishes to protect [it],

◯ Zen Master Xian instructed the assembly: "If you do not give rise to thoughts, fundamentally there is no body; the great function manifests before you. Do not talk about time." Later, when he was about to pass away, he asked the attendant, "Who is it that sits and departs?" The attendant said, "Sengqie." He again asked, "Who is it that stands and departs?" The attendant said, "Senggong." The Master then walked seven steps, let his hands hang down, and passed away.
◯ One day, Weishan was standing in attendance while Baizhang was present. Baizhang asked, "Who are you?" The Master said, "Lingyou." Baizhang said, "Stir the stove; is there fire?" The Master stirred it and said, "There is no fire." Baizhang stood up, stirred it deeply, and found a small spark. He held it up to show him and said, "Is this not fire?" The Master was suddenly enlightened.
◯ Zen Master Nantai Shou'an, because a monk asked: "When one is silent and without reliance, what then?" The Master said, "The silent base is only temporary." He then had a verse: "Nantai sits quietly with a stove of incense / The whole day he is composed, forgetting ten thousand worries / It is not about stopping the mind or removing deluded thoughts / It all comes from having no affairs to think about."
