직지심체요절 (Anthology of Great Buddhist Priests' Zen Teachings — World's Oldest Movable Metal Type, 1377)

○ Fayan, because a monk asked, "The teachings say, 'Establish all dharmas from the root of no-dwelling.' What is the root of no-dwelling?" The Master said, "When the form has not yet appeared, the name has not yet been named."

○ Fayan, because he saw a layman who was thirsty and asked for a drink but did not speak. [Fayan] then had a verse saying, "At eight years old, he asks but does not understand speech; it is not that he is not speaking. The great dharma is difficult to raise." Bai-yun Duan said, "It is not that he is not speaking; the great dharma is completely raised."

○ Mountain Master Xiu, upon entering the mountain ridge for the third time to visit Dizang, said, "This [journey] was specially for the sake of the Master. I came all the way from Tingzhou in this manner, suffering through hardships and crossing many mountain ridges. Is there any place [for me]?" Dizang said, "Crossing many mountain ridges is not bad." The Master did not grasp it. That night, while serving at the bedside, he said, "For a hundred kalpas and a thousand lives, I have acted against the Master. Coming here again, I find the Master unwell." Dizang got up, took his staff, and struck the ground in front of him, saying, "Just this! I will not replace it for you." The Master was enlightened from this.

○ Mountain Master Xiu asked a monk, "Where do you come from?" The monk said, "I come from Cui-yan." The Master said, "What words and phrases does Cui-yan have to instruct the disciples?" The monk said, "The Master often says, 'When you go out the door, you meet Maitreya.'"

[Fayan] said, "Is the stone in the heart?" Fayan had a great enlightenment here.

○ Fayan, because the Prince of Jiangnan invited him to open the hall, the Registrar of Monks said, "The four assemblies are all gathered together. The viewing happens all at once, [and they have] already crowded the dharma seat." The Master said, "Instead, they are meeting a true, good spiritual advisor." The Registrar of Monks had a great enlightenment at these words.

○ Fayan, because a monk asked, "What is a single scroll of scripture for a student?" The Master said, "The title is very clear."

○ Fayan, because a monk asked, "How can one penetrate the two words 'sound' and 'form'?" The Master said, "If the great assembly understands what the monk is asking, penetrating sound and form is not difficult."

○ Fayan, because a monk asked, "What is the one drop of water from the Cao Source?" The Master said, "It is the one drop of water from the Cao Source." At that time, National Teacher Tiantai Shao was attending at his side and had a great enlightenment.
