to Yuanwu, "Regarding the case of Yangshan meeting Dongsi, I have something to say. Dongsi only asked for one bright pearl. Yangshan immediately poured out a whole basketful." Yuanwu deeply approved.
National Teacher Tiantai Deshao was the later incarnation of Great Master Zhiyi. At age fifteen, a Brahmin monk saw him and encouraged him to leave the household life. During the Tang Dynasty, in the Tongguang era, he went to Shuzhou to see the abbot of Touzi, then visited Longya and Shushan. He thus visited fifty-four people in total, but none of the dharma connections were compatible. When he went to Linchuan to visit Jinghui, he just followed the assembly and had nothing to consult or discuss. A monk asked Fayan, "How can one suddenly cease the myriad conditions during the twelve hours [of the day]?" Fayan said, "Is emptiness the condition for you, or is form the condition for you? If you say emptiness is the condition, emptiness fundamentally has no condition. If you say form is the condition, form and mind are not two. So, what thing is your condition?" Deshao heard this and was shocked and astonished. Another day, a monk asked, "What is the one drop of water from the Cao Source?" Fayan said, "It is the one drop of water from the Cao Source." The monk was bewildered. The Master, who was at the side of the seat, suddenly had a great enlightenment. The frozen stagnations of his whole life melted away like ice. He then reported his enlightenment to Fayan. Fayan
said, "In the future, you should be a teacher to kings. You will greatly illuminate the ancestral way. I am not as good as you." From this time on, he responded to the inquiries of various quarters with unique and subtle methods, leaving no trace behind. One day, he ascended the hall and said, "The entrustment of Vulture Peak is clear. All you elders, examine it at once. If you can examine it, there is no other principle. It is just like the great sun now illuminating the sky; clouds darken the mountains and the great earth, but all conditioned worlds are all clearly revealed. Even unconditioned dharma is also like this. Since the World-Honored One entrusted it to Kasyapa, up until today, there has not been the slightest difference. To whom else should I entrust it? Therefore, the patriarch said, 'The heart is the heart from the beginning; the original heart is not an existent dharma. If there is a dharma, there is an original heart; if there is no heart, there is no original dharma.' This is the model of the Vulture Peak entrustment. All you elders, understand it thoroughly. The kindness of the king is hard to repay; the kindness of all the Buddhas is hard to repay; the kindness of parents and teachers is hard to repay; the kindness of the almsgivers is hard to repay. If you wish to repay this kindness, you must understand—"
