"I saw two mud oxen fighting and entering the sea. To this day, there is no news of them." The Master said, "You elders, the facilities set up at the gate are just words from the Caodong school. The true ancient style must be [found in] Xuefeng and the Hermit."
○ Xuefeng, because a monk asked, "What is the awakening that touches the eye?", said, "Do you see the lantern?"
Chan Master Dasui Fazhen, because a monk asked, "When the kalpa eon fire blazes and the great chiliocosm is destroyed, I wonder if this [self-nature] is also destroyed?", said, "It is destroyed." The monk said, "Then does it follow [the fire]?" The Master said, "It follows it." The monk then asked Master Xiu, who replied as before. [The monk] asked, "Why is it not destroyed?" Xiu said, "Because it is identical to the great chiliocosm."
○ Dasui, because a monk asked, "Is there Buddha-Dharma in the mountains of Dasui?", said, "There is." [The monk] asked, "What is the Buddha-Dharma in the mountains of Dasui?" The Master said, "The large stones are large, and the small stones are small." Like the verse: The long body of the dharma is long, the short body is short. Also like chiseling through the blue rock to find the heart is to lose the original source. Truth changes into action and appearance, dust before the eyes. I invite the gentleman to try and see the other mountain.

He saw a vegetable leaf and was happy, clapping his hands. He said to the other two, "There must be a man of the Way in this mountain. We should follow the stream to find him." Xuefeng replied angrily, "Your wisdom eye is too clouded. How will you distinguish people in the future? If he is so careless with blessings, what is the use of living in these mountains?"
○ Xuefeng, because a monk had lived in a hut in the mountains for many years without shaving his head, made a wooden ladle. When he went to the stream to scoop water to drink, a monk saw him and asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch’s coming from the West?" The hermit held up the ladle and said, "The stream is deep and the handle of the ladle is long." When the monk returned and reported this to the Master, the Master said, "How very strange! How very strange!" One day, the Master went with his attendant carrying a razor. As soon as they met, he asked, "If you can speak [the truth], I will not shave your head." The hermit washed his head and knelt before the Master, and the Master shaved him.
○ Master Changlu cited this story and also cited the time Dongshan was wandering when he asked a hermit,
